NUS-Tsinghua Joint Studio: Sharing Cities | 2017 | Tsinghua studio
Bai Ta Si | 白塔寺
Chinese cities now are shifting from primarily rapid urban expansion to large-scale urban regeneration, in order to improve urban life quality. This studio focuses on the White Pagoda Temple area, a historical urban quarter in the Old City of Beijing having a mix of residential, cultural and commercial functions and filled with various cultural heritages. Sitting in and defining this area is a white pagoda temple built in Yuan Dynasty, and the white pagoda is the oldest and largest in China. The Fusuijing Building, a socialist housing project, built at the early stage of P. R. China, is the only high-rise building in the site. Those two landmarks, together with Luxun Museum and Flower Market, form the backbone of the site. The White Pagoda Temple area is flanked by high-rise office buildings and housing on the south and north boundaries respectively, and it accommodates many activities of not only local residents but also tourists and people working in office buildings. The diversity of this area provides a fertile test soil for testing new ideas of sharing city.
Based on the characteristics of this area, the studio is divided into 8 themes, namely sharing housing, sharing workspace, sharing transportation, sharing education, sharing culture, sharing heritage, sharing commerce and sharing infrastructure. The urban design group of each theme is required to develop overall strategies for the whole site as well as detailed design solutions for sub-areas. |
